'Only Children' is a collaborative work between Anthony Christopher (Fictions), James Lees (Ghostwoods, Silver Sircus), and Joshua MacGregor (Spirit Lights).

Developed out of demos and sketches initially recorded to a mobile phone, compositions were approached in a similar way to painting - thinking about sound as brushstrokes on a canvas, as colour or texture, then stepping back to examine how different elements interact together. Altering or reducing until an image formed. Recorded in a home studio environment by Jim Jones (Scum Vegas) across 2023-2024, the collective contributions birthed something that feels simultaneously intimate and distant, existing at the border between the alluring and the ominous sides of suspense.

Making use of piano, nylon string guitar, drums, synthesisers and drone elements, the album’s nine tracks traverse themes of identity, creation, human limitations and obsessions, illusion versus reality, and time’s passage.

Symbolism is deployed across the album as a vehicle for storytelling and predominantly has origins in nature and memory. Much like the artworks selected, sounds from the natural world are used symbolically throughout to communicate movement, tension, and turning points. Sounds drawn from musical instruments serve a similar purpose in signalling changes to scenery, as is reflected in album centrepiece Murmuration which uses enveloping orchestral strings, coiling piano runs and trailing sine wave arpeggios to symbolise the synchronised movements and patterns of birds swarming in the sky. Similarly, opening track Spinning sonically depicts totems of childhood. An exploration of the contrasts between innocence and corruption, the surface and the unseen threats that lie beneath it, the long-form piece of music transpires in slow motion across an imagined playground-like setting with hypnotic nylon string guitar figures and sparse drums left hanging in the air until delicate piano phrases provide a space for landing.

In Balance

'In Balance' is a meditative album of blissful synthesiser drones and textures. Arranged in 2024 after the completion of 'Spirit Lights', the album serves as its companion piece. 3 of the 5 songs feature re-works of material from the aforementioned album, either as re-arrangements of stems or re-recordings using a shoegaze-like modular synth and pedal chain. This is demonstrated in the second part of ‘Presence / Glimmers’ as the sequence from ‘Darko’ is programmed to a major key and droned out, creating angelic layers of sound that swell and weave together. Sublime closer ‘Lovestars / Eyes Closed’ employs this same treatment, beginning with a bubbling modular collage before finishing with a kaleidoscopic wash of analogue synth tones.

Most of this album came about by chance. I was scheduled to play a soundbath gig with an interactive lighting display and space for the audience to be lying down for an hour. To meet the task I challenged myself to re-write some of my music to create a calm and hopeful space. The gig never came to be but I recorded a lot of material using a strange setup of synths into pedals and modular. I then arranged the recordings in a different way to my other work, automating the volumes and panning from left to right in long patterns of multiples of 5, 6 and 7 bars. This was to create a lot of gentle movement and something immersive the listener can get lost in.

Experimenting with form and formlessness, ‘Life in Every Breath’ is an entrancing meditation on gratitude and is thematically linked to Japanese Bushido ideology. An ode to finding stillness, the dream-like centrepiece ‘Waves (Within)’ is one of Joshua's oldest modular recordings, comprising warbles and drones from five years ago. Originally released on 4000 Records’ 'Solidarity Soundwaves' aid fundraiser, the soothing ‘Yield’ is tied to Taoist concepts of non-violence and acceptance.

YEARNS

'Drone Prompts' is an abstract/ambient EP series created by vintage credenza (John Russell).

In this unique project, a simple drone/soundscape - created by Russell - is shared with a talented Meanjin friend, who then transforms the initial sonic prompt into a distinctive new piece.

Some choose to build upon the track by adding layers, textures and/or instruments, others chop and rework it and others transform the source prompt into something so far removed from its beginnings that it's completely unrecognisable.

The artists are given no briefing or direction.
Each artist receives a unique drone prompt designed specifically for them.

The possibilities are endless.
The creations are remarkable.

The first installation of the series features incredible and eclectic contributions from Madeleine Cocolas, Tidsguiden, YEARNS and Spirit Lights.

I moved to a little town in the Alpajarra mountains in Spain late last summer surrounded by the imposing Sierra Nevada with no distractions bar the colossal mountains, river-less valleys and secret beaches.
I began recording everything, the waves washing in on the shore, the crickets in the Rambla, the buzzing tree full of wasps next to the house and made this album in tribute to the dream of escaping London and living peacefully and simply, closer to nature.

They Love Eden Grey. Who? Well just about anyone who's heard her tunes, enjoys her art, or follows her fascinating forays into the world of modular synths. Here comes another massive point in her favour, the stellar five-track EP 'Vortices'. Every track does a delightful job of extolling the virtues of Grey as a fantastic music-maker without uttering a single word. Well, except her own name. It's a cool name, and this is a cool EP. Get on this.
