In recent times especially, Meanjin (Brisbane) has showcased an extremely vibrant and exciting scene for sounds that loosely fall into the realms of shoegaze, dreampop, post-punk, alt. rock and myriad subgenres awash with heavy reverb, cymbal storms, and atmospheric vocals.

As lovers of these sounds and the local artists who create them, 4000 Records' decision to create a time-capsule of some of the players at the forefront of this community was an easy and exciting one.

Big love to all the amazing artists making noise in our fair city - long may your reverb ring out in small venues, community halls, under old Queenslanders, and through our stereo speakers.

Wo Ist Der Bahnhof?

I used to do bookings for a youthcentre from 1989 to 2004. Around 93 or 94 i received a demotape from a band from Nijmegen named "Wo Ist Der Bahnhof" probably named after the famous Koot & Bie sketch. The music was New Wave / Postpunk and very good. I wanted to book them. The tape was a TDK C46 and apart from the bandname, tracklisting and a phonenumber there was no further information.

I gave them a call and spoke with the singer. He told me he was British himself, but the rest of the band was Dutch. They were talking to some label and were planning to do shows when this went through. They asked me to contact them after a year.

I called them back but the line was disconnected. I never saw the tracks from the demo resurface on a official LP or CD and i never heard about this band again.

I want to preserve this, and so i put this release in BC with new artwork for all to enjoy. If former bandmembers want to reconnect, drop us a line here!

'Anxietika' is a compelling collection of gothic rock, post-punk, minimal wave, and dream pop tracks is a raw and deeply personal exploration of Jed's battle with generalised anxiety disorder.

Anxietika is a metaphor for the omnipresent, translucent goddess of fear which personifies his struggles. This concept is vividly brought to life in the title track, with lyrics such as, "no remorse, no relent, every soul, she infects, she looms!"

The album's hauntingly beautiful tracks, recorded between 2018 and 2024 in various home studios, offer a window into Jed's world of artistic catharsis.

"Whenever anxiety and depression were really screwing my life up, I always had music," Jed explains. "I went through constant panic attacks, walking out of service jobs, unemployment, social anxiety, troubled interpersonal relationships, and horrifically painful breakups. However, my psychologist always encouraged me to keep writing music, even when I was at my lowest. I believe that music truly saves. It saved me. Now in my thirties, I’ve learned how to manage my symptoms, and the best remedy has been constant creativity. Writing music about these situations, and then recording them and performing them on stage, turns a negative into a positive. It’s fantastic."

Tower Defense - Repeat / Girl U Want

Tower Defense

Hailing from Nashville, TN, Tower Defense is a double bass blasting post-punk band that has equal amounts of love for Gang of Four as they do The B-52s. What I'm saying is, there's a unique blend of rock, harmony and fun here.

The band just released a new single called "Repeat" that is about musical earworms. As luck would have it, the song itself is also a musical earworm!

Die Zeit, sie stiehlt auch solche Wunden,
die noch keiner hat gefunden.

Wunden, nein, sie sind nicht heiter,
Sie brennen meist, sind oft voll Eiter.

Heilen tun die Wunden langsam,
bei machen tun sie's nie.

Und auch wenn Sie geheilt sind dann,
unvergessen bleiben sie.

SOBER PUNK 2077

Phantosmia

It's over, over now,
I'm sober, so far, for now,
Called you every slur I know,
My broken thumbs and vows,
Too small for this loud town,
I'm sober, please come around,
But it's over, over now

Pink-slipped

Acef Stripe Recordings

Pink-slipped was a collection of songs that came together during a tumultuous time of labor strife in the US. The UAW was striking, others being laid off, and of course, the Bandcamp dismissal of half their loyal workers. I choose a sketch i found that my father made of a somewhat weathered but proud man. The pink backdrop revealing his vulnerability. I could almost see him in the room as they told him his job was over. No longer as strong and optimistic as the new workers but always loyal to a fault. A life given to a cause that had always planned to erase him.

To all my artist friends out there, we are stronger together.

Founder in Oddity

Start Together

Start Together's debut and swan song album 'Founder In Oddity' is exactly how it sounds; spanning 32 minutes across six tracks, the album leans into genres that could be defined as post-punk, shoegaze, post-rock, alternative pop and kraut-rock.

From intense gritty, abrasive guitars and galloping rhythm section grooves, to pop hooks reminiscent of 80’s post-punk, diverted through soft and luscious reverb-drenched guitar soundscapes, this album is truly a blissful journey for the avid listener of alternate music.

Side A: The first track ‘Impostering the Nascent’ is a beautiful, shimmering instrumental, and one that may be recognised by local punters, as it frequented Start Together’s live sets over the years. This opening track is followed by ‘Squire Jefferson Care Instructions’ an uplifting post-punk meets alternative pop number, the last chorus of which seems to almost soar towards the end. To close side A, the cutting two-part track “Lookfar” leans intently into 80’s post-punk synthesizer territory, and steers out of it with a repetitive groove analogous to more modern dream-pop/indie bands such as The War On Drugs.

Side B: Once the record is flipped and needle lowered, the unmistakable opening first line “stay convincing, stay certain” of ‘Separate Beds’ sounds out. Somewhat reminiscent of New Order, the track is brimming with a vivacious energy from beginning to end, matched with a charmingly frank, understated vocal delivery. ‘Skeptics’, an impressively delivered shoegaze instrumental then follows, invoking the listener on a dream-like journey, with a sense of purpose and curious energy. Closing the album is the title-track, ‘Founder in Oddity’. Boasting a track length of 8 minutes, it is an obscure, kraut-rock expedition where Start Together demonstrate their talent for creating unique and dynamic guitar-wonder soundscapes, with the repeated chord progression in the outro invoking the feeling of a tape skipping and playing the same phrase over and over.
