Swimming in the Dark

Funkland Inc.

Ann Purcell

"Swimming in the Dark" is a playful soul and R&B duet from Funkland Inc. featuring guest vocalist Annie Purcell, released in 2025 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic film "Jaws." Inspired by the movie's unforgettable opening scene, the song imagines a flirtatious late-night conversation between two carefree beachgoers heading into the ocean—while listeners already know the danger lurking beneath the waves.

Driven by a smooth groove, warm harmonies, and a touch of retro 1970s soul, "Swimming in the Dark" balances romance and suspense with a wink and a smile. Funkland Inc.'s Jesse Miles and Annie Purcell trade verses filled with optimism, attraction and seaside adventure, while subtle lyrical hints foreshadow the fate familiar to generations of movie fans. The result is a tongue-in-cheek tribute that lovingly celebrates one of cinema's most iconic scenes without ever taking itself too seriously.

Equal parts beach-party anthem, vintage soul duet, and cinematic parody, "Swimming in the Dark" is a clever homage to a blockbuster that continues to make audiences think twice before taking a midnight swim.
